The schoolmonitor came with some breathtaking figures and statistics. After getting the diploma from a conservatorium, Arts Academy, Dance academy thet found that after 5 years only 50% was still active/working in the sector culture & the arts. And 10 years after graduation only 5% was still working in the sector culture & the arts. This is a huge destruction of our cultural capital. We will discuss several reasons why this phenomena is happening: * bad preparation during study fort his very harsh environment of the real world. *what should students have learned besides their form of art/culture? *budget cuts and the effects on private life. *the fast growing legion of the selfemployed without being an entrepeneur. *health consequences. *taxation. *crossovers, flexability.

Modern society is a crazy world of total flex. So if you expected to have a job in the sector culture & the arts from 9.00 – 17.00 your will be very disapponted. Welcome in the real world: one day you work for 14 hours (to meet a deadline), the other day: nothing may happen. This example is very true in the sector dtp/design/studio’s/media. Or in the sector music: you teach students during the day and in the evening you perform, so making 14 hours a day and badly paid. How to redeem that with family life? Or in the sector dance: if you are lucky and get a job at one of the famous national dance theatres/ballets: it take quite a toll on the body (fractures, trauma’s) and when you are 30, they fire you as you can not perform several movements anymore. So is there a dance life after 30? How to survive body stress and keep income?

In this plenum we follow up on the results of the CA seminar 2015, where we did focus totally on how to organise your privat life long learning, as conservatoria, art academia fail to offer these possibilities. Lets have a look again to the possibilities of life long learning in the guild model, working with a coach/master in your field. How to organise this. The challenge.

If 10 violin players do audition, what makes them to choose you? What is your added value above the others? You studied painting, but there is work to make computer designs in advertisement…what makes them to choose you for the job? So what is your added value. 8 singers do audition, what makes them to choose you? What is your added value above the others? So it is in all other sectors of the arts/culture world. So the bottom line is: How to develop an added value, so you will have work/income. So WHAT are such essential added values.

From Saturday July 30 – August 2 was the 35th International Christian Artists TRADE UNION seminar at the KSI, Bad Honnef, Germany. This seminar was organised with the help of EZA and the EUROPEAN Union. About 140 persons gathered from 18 nations to discuss the growing problem of unemployment among youth in the sector arts & culture. Schoolmonitoring shows that 5 years after graduation 50% have left the sector arts/culture; 10 years after graduation appr, 5% are still active in the sector arts/culture: this is a huge destruction of the so called ‘cultural capital’(=creative persons). Unemployment started to rise very fast as result of the crisis starting in 2008. This seminar builds on the former ones, where several aspects leading to unemployment in this sector were researched and discussed. Speakers were: Dr.Aart Jan de Geus (CEO, Bertelsmann Stiftung, Germany), Prof. Maarten Verkerk (University of Maastricht and Eindhoven, Netherlands), Dr.Lasma Dobele (University of Riga, Latvia), Dr.Irene Mandle (Research manager Eurofound, Ireland), Dr.Geoffrey Stevenson (University of Edinburgh, Scotland), Leen La Rivière (Chairman, trade union Christian Artists Federation, Netherlands), Dr.Philip Noble (Travelling lector on cross-cultural communication, Scotland), Peter J.Noble (Lector on creative skills, University of the Highlands, Scotland), Stephen Noble (Director Advertising agency Equator, award winner, Scotland). And a short welcome by Mr.Jozef Mozolewski (chairman Solidarinosc, Poland). The lectures were interspersed with real LIFE STORIES of artists who belong to the left 5%, so HOW did they survive? WHAT can we learn? Interviewed were: Eva-Maria Admiral (actress, Austria), Noémie Daval (installations/fine arts, France), Jan Willem van Delft (musician,NL) & Gerdien van Delft (designer/graphics, Nl), Desiree van Drongelen (dancer, Nl), Hans Inge Fagervik (singer-songwriter, Norway), Paul Fransen (gallery, Nl), Paul Field (singer-songwriter, Uk), Pierre Lachat (artists, France), Peter S.Smith (graphic artist, UK), Heike Wetzel (musician, Germany). After each lecture and interview there was an open debate with the participants, and the opportunity to ask questions.
The 2 plenums days, were followed by 3 days with 77 WORKSHOPS and MASTERCLASSES ro learn added values to help with new orientations for work and income (putting the plenum days in practise)!
